Before you enrol anywhere — verify accreditation

Whether you're choosing a university, college, or skills training provider, always verify the institution's accreditation independently. Here's how:

  • Search the official DHET register The Register of Private Higher Education Institutions is published at www.dhet.gov.za under "Registers and Reports". Cross-check the exact institution name.
  • Check the Council on Higher Education (CHE) For degree and diploma programmes, qualifications must also be accredited by the CHE. Visit www.che.ac.za to verify.
  • For skills training, check the QCTO The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations accredits skills development providers. Visit www.qcto.org.za.
  • Be cautious of pressure tactics Be wary of institutions that pressure you to enrol quickly, demand large upfront payments, or refuse to provide written accreditation documentation.
  • Verify physical address and contact details Legitimate institutions have verifiable physical campuses and consistent contact information. If you cannot find a real address, treat it as a red flag.
