A National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE) at Level 5 or
Advanced Certificate in Education at NQF Level 6 – not specialising in Foundation Phase Teaching or
A former undergraduate Higher Diploma in Education or
A former Further Diploma in Education not specialising in Foundation Phase Teaching or
A professional Bachelor of Education (BEd) Degree or
A Bachelor’s degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education PGCE or
University Education Diploma.

A Bachelor’s degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education PGCE or

A National Senior Certificate (Matric) granting access to Bachelor Degree studies or
A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning (prior to 2008) or
A National Certificate Vocational (NCV), that meets the requirements for admission to a Bachelor Degree or
A former three-year Education Diploma or a National Professional Diploma in Education – (360 credits at level 5). For example, Diploma in Grade R Teaching or
Teachers who are in possession of a recognised Certificate or Diploma in education may present their qualifications for entry into Bachelor of Education with a possibility of credit transfer for successfully completed modules. Credit Accumulation Transfer may be considered for successfully completed modules up to 180 credits. Students enrol for remaining 320 credits of the BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching), after successfully applying for assessment of prior learning or
A former undergraduate Higher Diploma in Education or a former Further Diploma in Education (NQF Level 6) or
Teachers who are in possession of a recognised Certificate or Diploma in education or any other relevant field may present their qualifications for entry into Bachelor of Education with a possibility of credit transfer for successfully completed modules. Credit Accumulation Transfer may be considered for successfully completed modules up to 180 credits. Students enrol for remaining 320 credits of the BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching), after successfully applying for assessment of prior learning or
Assessment of prior learning (RPL) could also lead to entry or advanced credit standing.

A BEd, or a general first degree or diploma, plus an Advanced Diploma in Teaching, or a former PGCE or Higher Diploma in Education Postgraduate (HDE PG) or
A former Advanced Certificate in Education, a former college Higher Diploma in Education or Further Diploma in Education or
An Advanced Certificate in Teaching.

National Senior Certificate (NSC) which grants access to Diploma studies or
National Certificate (Vocational) NC (V) at NQF Level 4 which grants access to Diploma studies or
A Level 4 or level 5 Certificate in Early Childhood Development or
A foreign qualification that is equivalent to the NSC as determined by SAQA or
A Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) at NQF Level 4.
Students who have completed their Senior Certificate prior to 2008 must have obtained at least four subjects on level D or higher.

The minimum entry requirement is an approved bachelor’s degree PLUS a recognised professional teaching qualification for example a bachelor’s degree plus PGCE / HDE/ University Diploma in Education (UED) OR
A four-year professional teaching degree (such as a B.Ed) OR
A four-year teaching professional teaching qualification as well as an Advanced Diploma in Education (for example in Leadership and Management (Level 7))
